Portfolio Review for June 2020

By The Boy Who Procrastinates - July 01, 2020

In the second quarter of the year, the US stock markets have staged a strong rebound from the massive sell-off in late March, which subsequently trailed off to a "Kangaroo market" as cited by CNBC. This is likely due to a mixture of optimism and pessimism. The former could be driven by the reopening of economies and stimulus measures and the latter was induced by jitters from mounting risk of a second wave of coronavirus cases.

Furthermore, we are witnessing a series of bankruptcy and insolvency filings such as US car-rental company Hertz, German scandal-hit payments company Wirecard, US vitamin and nutrition chain GNC and Canadian entertainment firm Cirque du Soleil.

But even in the dark clouds of Covid-19, there are silver linings. We have gradually regained the freedom that we may have taken for granted as Singapore has embarked on a phased reopening from the 2-months "circuit breaker" period. Several entertainment attractions have also been granted permission to reopen in July.

To that, the STI has recorded a surge of 6% gain in the second quarter, from 2,440.27 in April to 2,589.91 in June.

Portfolio

Even though buying opportunities were aplenty in a bear market, it was a rather unexciting quarter for me as I have only initiated positions in CapitaCom Trust and Mapletree Com Trust during one of the market troughs in April.

The capital injection to the portfolio in April has been represented by the green portion which helps to provide a better picture of the change in portfolio value.

Along with the mild recovery of the STI amidst Phase 2 reopening of the local economy in June, my portfolio value has also mostly recovered and stabilized at $140k in the second quarter.

Dividend

The 2nd quarter has recorded the collection of dividends at $1,111.96. Compared to 2Q2019, the dividend collected has increased by approximately 14% from $973.59 despite delays of dividend payouts by some companies due to the impact of Coronavirus pandemic.

The dividend collected from this quarter is contributed by the following securities:
